Manitoba comes from "Manito-wapow", which means "where
the spirit lives" in the Cree language of Indigenous people. The
name Manitoba was given to the province at its creation in 1870 at the
suggestion of Métis leader Louis Riel.
Winnipeg comes from the Cree word "Win", muddy and "nipee", water.
